Layr Ankle Support (University)
There is currently minimal equipment for amateur athletes to safely transition a ligament damaged ankle back to full recovery. The LAYR ankle support provides the athlete with a specialised sock and brace to provide maximum level of protection and stability whilst they recover during this transition period.

Through interviews with both injured amateur athletes, professionals such as physios and through my own personal experience I had discovered there was a lack of easily available equipment for amateur athletes to safety transition from severe ankle ligament damage to full recovery. The main problem occurs when an amateur athlete is ready to transition from a heavy-duty ankle support device (currently provided in the form of a large ankle brace with strapping) to no protection other than strapping. Therefore the athlete either has to go to the physio to get their ankle strapped or learn how to strap their ankle themselves and buy the necessary strapping tape.
The concept was to develop a sock where the strapping would be embedded into the structure of the sock so the athlete could easy slip on the sock and adjust the strapping. Sketching and quick mock ups were used to test if this theory was appropriate and feasible.
Developing the idea
Through further research and testing I had discovered that the sock layer needed to have an extra level of protection for the severe ligament cases and then strip off that extra layer of protection as they recovered.
The Layer sock and brace was designed to allow amateur athletes to easily and safely adjust their level of protection and stability as they recovered.
The 3D knitted sock eases the transition period between using a brace and full recovery by providing the user with a base level of stability, achieved through a lateral lock which mitigates re-injury and accommodates for over 80% of ankle related injuries.
The brace which has several laminated layers of Polyester EVA and Lycra is designed to go on top of the sock to add an extra layer of protection and medial stability for severely injured athletes.
